What they are saying... about When I’m Down
Beat, May 2011
Moving, solemn introspection
Most compelling is Splurge's haunting performance of an original entitled When I'm Down - a moving, solemn moment of introspection via Greg Williams' expressive vocals and his band's intensely foreboding rhythms.
Splurge Unheard: a selection of rarities... and a new album in the works
Splurge is marking its 15th anniversary by releasing a career-spanning rarities collection and recording its fourth album.
The band has just launched Splurge Unheard, a selection of rarities from 1997-2007, and has a new album Wait For The Sun in the works, due in 2014.
The download of Splurge Unheard now includes a new bonus track, the home demo of Song of Love.
Splurge Unheard includes new mixes of three never-before-heard tracks—one from each Splurge album—and six other unreleased and rare recordings. Something About Love (Splurge), Under Your Thumb (Heavy Weather) and Kiss Me (The Cure For The Cure) have been mixed by Melbourne gear maestro David Sullivan and mastered by in Nashville by Jim DeMain, Yes Master.
Kiss Me will be released in 2014 on PB 100 the long-awaited 100th release from influential Melbourne label Popboomerang Records, which will feature rare and exclusive tracks from their stable of bands.
Kiss Me
New mix of an unreleased track from The Cure For The Cure (2007). This recording wasn’t completed for the album - was a bit of an ugly duckling. Greg Williams has added a new vocal, with Leticia Maher singing backing vocals. The rest was already there, but buried.
Under Your Thumb
New mix of an unreleased track from the album Heavy Weather (2002). This recording was recoverd from the original ADATs as a complete take but with only a guide vocal. Greg Williams and Greg Arnold finished the vocals, then added some acoustic 12-string and wig-out!
Something About Love
New mix of an unreleased track from the album Splurge (1999). This recording was made in the first sessions for our debut album. It was completed but not considered for the final track selection. “What were we thinking?” said Greg Arnold. The song itself dates from The Every Brothers.
When I’m Down
This track was recorded and mixed for The Cure For The Cure but it was swapped at the last minute with Get Up And Watch TV in the final track selection (what were we thinking?). Released as a B-side to the limited-edition single She’s Not The One, the track also appeared on Popboomerang’s "Electric & Eclectic: Rarities Volume One". Read Review...
The Well Ran Dry
Recorded and mixed for The Cure For The Cure but omitted, along with When I’m Down, from the final track listing. Seems to exist out somewhere in the desert between Heavy Weather and The Cure For The Cure...
What’s The Matter With Me
It was back to the drawing board with this one—known as the disco mix! We kept the brass, drums and vocal and added a new bass part for the remixed version which made the grade.
Song of Love
Happy all the time! This song is a co-write with Steve Housden of LRB (don’t ask). It was recorded for the first Splurge album but omitted from the final track listing. Just too much love, I guess... but the Two Gregs later added it to their set as The Every Brothers in an unrecorded Dragon-inspired, scarf-waving, piano version.
I Need Your Love
The Two Gregs do their best John and Paul impersonations (which is which?) on this song recorded for Splurge’s debut album but omitted from the final track listing. A bit ragged but glorious! The song pre-dates Splurge. Greg Williams’ acoustic version was released on vinyl-only “Here and Now” (1990)—a collection of home demos on Greasy Pop records—and re-issued on vinyl and CD with “Louder Than Words” (1991), by The Greasy Record Company.
Hey Children
More of a jam than an actual song—from the first sessions of our debut album. Editing didn’t help it make the grade. Anoraks note: the flanged drums from the intro were sampled for a loop in the new version on The Cure For The Cure. The loop was originally used as the backing track for the demo and survived, along with the original thrashy acoustic guitar.
